Welcome to 1st and 2nd Grade

Dear Parents,

A very belated Happy New Year to all. This year has taken off like a rocket and we are already busy with many projects and upcoming events. My apologies for not getting this letter out sooner, I had some technical difficulties.

Everyone should be receiving their Flat Stanley back in the mail from the relative or friend to whom he was sent. You should send him to school with your child beginning Wednesday, January 20, along with any pictures or interesting mementos that accompanied him.  Please rehearse with your child Flat Stanley's travels as he or she will be giving an oral report to the class. Questions are always the class' favorite part of these oral reports, so be sure your child knows the answers. It is always fascinating and educational to hear and see all the places Flat Stanley has traveled!Thank you for your time and committment to this worthwhile and fun project.

We have also been busy learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the impact he has made on our country. I hope your child has shared with you all that he or she has learned. While trying to be as thorough as possible, I am also aware of presenting this important slice of American history in a very age-appropriate and meaningful manner. The faculty and I strive to be sure the values of inclusiveness and fairness are paracticed daily in our classroom and on the playground at St. Helena Catholic School.

Coming soon will be many events, please be sure to watch for calendars, bulletins, and newsletters coming home. Saturday, January 30th will be our kick-off Mass and Open House for Catholic Schools Week. I do hope you can join us. There will be a lot of fun and different dress codes for Catholic Schools Week, be sure to check for these. Also during Catholic Schools Week will be Groundhog Day and the 100th day of school. You should be deciding upon a collection of 100 things that your child can bring to school on Friday, February 5 for our celebration. More on this later. For 2nd grade parents only, there will be a mandatory Mass and meeting Sunday, February 7 at 8:00am as we begin our preparation for the sacrament of First Holy Communion. The brief (you'll be home in plenty of time to watch the Super Bowl) meeting is held after Mass, probably in our classroom, and at that time your First Eucharist Family Activity books will be handed out. Please be sure that at least one parent attends this important Mass and meeting.

I hope you are all enjoying this long weekend, and are staying safe and dry out of the rain.  Please know that I am vey grateful for all your help as I partner with you in teaching and raising these beautiful children of God.
